Rep. Tokuda warns Iran strikes will set back Middle East diplomacy

The desert dust continues to settle in Iran following the United States’ strike on Iranian nuclear facilities Saturday.

Many congressional representatives are headed back to Washington, D.C. this week as Iran retaliated against Americans, launching 19 missiles Monday at the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. Hawaii Representative Jill Tokuda was one of the House members returning Monday and spoke with Wake Up 2Day live after arriving in Washington.

“I’m glad to hear the strikes on Qatar were intercepted. The safety of our men and women is foremost in our minds right now,” Rep. Tokuda said.

Messaging from the Trump administration has been incohesive, with the President floating the idea of regime change over the weekend on his social media platform. Rep. Tokuda thinks the move will raise the temperature.

“Diplomacy needs to be the answer. Even in the administration, you hear Vance, you hear Rubio, you hear Hegseth, all saying, ‘we’re not talking about regime change, we were simply talking about the potential for nuclear weapons,’ then you have a President who posts on social or makes a comment about potential regime change. This kind of erratic behavior leaves too much room for misperceptions from both allies and adversaries that could be very dangerous.”

As of now, reports are inconclusive about the damage to Iran’s nuclear sites after strikes on Saturday, but the Associated Press reports that Yaakov Amidror, a former Israeli national security adviser, said the Iranians may have moved it from the heavily fortified Fordo facility in anticipation of the U.S. attacking it.

“First and foremost, the strikes on Iran set back the potential for a diplomatic solution in the Middle East,” Rep. Tokuda said. “That ultimately is what we all were looking for. At one point last week, we thought that’s what the President was also seeking to do by giving some time for European leaders and others to sit at tables and try to work this out.”

President Trump said Tuesday that he hopes that Iran’s strikes are the last of their retaliation measures. Rep. Tokuda blames him for this conflict.

“We have to remember this is the same President who walked away from a very hard-fought, long-fought agreement, negotiated agreement that came about in 2015, and when he came into office, he scrapped that and ripped that apart and said I can do better. Never did, and here we are in this situation today."
