Rep. Tokuda Celebrates President Biden’s Action on Pacific Remote Islands National Marine Sanctuary

(Washington, DC) – Today, Representative Jill Tokuda (HI-02) attended an event at the White House to celebrate President Biden’s announcement of two new national monuments and plans to advance designation of a new National Marine Sanctuary within the next 30 days to protect all U.S. waters around the Pacific Remote Islands. The Pacific Remote Islands are in Hawaii’s Second Congressional District, represented by Rep. Tokuda.

"I am thrilled that President Biden is taking this action to protect some of the most fragile and ecologically precious waters in the world home in Hawaii. As the area’s representative in Congress, I will do everything in my power both to advance this designation and to ensure that the federal government takes the appropriate steps by working with the Native Hawaiian community who are interconnected to the Pacific Remote Islands,” said Rep. Jill Tokuda.

When completed, the new sanctuary would conserve 777,000 square miles and encompass areas undressed by previous administrations so that all areas around the Hawaiian Islands including atolls and reefs, would be protected. The Biden administration is dedicated to conducing a public process to work with Native Hawaiian cultural leaders.
