Waiʻanae, HI – This week, U.S. Representative Jill Tokuda (HI-02) joined members of Mālama Mākua and the Waiʻanae Moku Kupuna Council, with support from U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii, for the installation of a Peace Pole in front of Makua Military Reservation.
The Peace Pole, inscribed with “May Peace Prevail on Earth” and “Hoʻomaluhia Me Ka Honua,” is part of a global project to promote harmony and unity, while also acknowledging the harms and impacts of past and present conflicts.
“During this time of great turbulence and divide in our country, it is even more important that we lean into peace and show respect and aloha for one another,” said Rep. Tokuda. “I was humbled to stand with the many hands and hearts, past and present, who made this Peace Pole installation possible. It serves as a reminder of how far we have come, and the work we will do together to strive for a more peaceful and safe world.”
“There are fences of violence everywhere and those fences do nothing to build friendly and lasting relationships,” said Sparky Rodrigues of Mālama Mākua. “Our job is to remind the people of Hawaiʻi that building relationships is better than building fences. The aloha embrace welcomes all peace-loving people everywhere.”
