Rep. Jill Tokuda to Host Governor Josh Green as Guest at State of the Union Address

February 7, 2023

(Washington, DC) – Today, Representative Jill Tokuda announced that she will be joined by Governor Josh Green as her guest to President Biden’s State of the Union Address to Congress. The State of the Union Address will highlight the achievements that House Democrats and President Biden have delivered over the past two years and the work that Democrats are doing to defend our American values from extreme MAGA Republicans.

Governor Green is Hawaiʻi’s ninth governor and is a husband, father, and physician. After completing medical school, Governor Green chose to work in a medically underserved area of the island of Hawaii. Governor Green understands the life changing impacts that access to quality healthcare and medicine can have on a person’s life.

While serving together in the Hawaiʻi State Legislature, Green and Tokuda led efforts on recruiting and retaining doctors in rural and medically underserved communities through the Physician Workforce Assessment Fee.  During the COVID-19 crisis, they supported the state in critical areas of leadership—Governor Green focused on healthcare and pandemic response, and Rep Tokuda tracking the federal funds coming into Hawaiʻi. Now in their current roles, they share a commitment to ensuring that Hawaiʻi residents, regardless of where they live, have access to quality health care, housing they can afford, good jobs, and the resources and support they need to thrive in this place we call home.

“I am pleased to host Governor Josh Green as my inaugural guest for President Biden’s State of the Union Address. As parents of young children, we share a sense of urgency to take on some of the toughest issues facing our families and communities.  Our work together will ensure that Hawaiʻi has a strong state and federal partnership as we uplift Hawaiʻi as a model for preventing gun violence, fight to lower health care costs and expand access in rural communities, and take on the climate crisis,” said Rep. Jill Tokuda.

"I’m excited to reunite with my former legislative colleague-turned U.S. Rep. Tokuda, for our first State of the Union Address in Washington, D. C.,” said Governor Josh Green, M.D. “We will have some time to discuss our common priorities for how we can best, collaboratively, serve the people of Hawai‘i.”
