Washington, D.C. – In an effort to understand the gravity of the sweeping effects of losing tens of thousands of federal employees, today, U.S. Representative Jill Tokuda (HI-02), along with U.S. Representative Steny Hoyer (MD-05), led 48 of their Democratic colleagues in a letter to the Acting Director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management requesting a full breakdown of workers who have accepted the “deferred resignation” offer.
Recent reports have suggested that more than 20,000 federal employees have opted in and accepted the offer, but the Administration has not disclosed further details. The letter requests, by the end of Feb. 19, 2025, a full breakdown of the number of federal employees who have accepted the offer by agency across states, territories, and congressional districts.
“The Administration owes us answers. In their overzealous efforts to cut government, they are jeopardizing the delivery of services and support to everyday American, in every state in the country,” said Rep. Tokuda. “Federal employees are the backbone of this country, and they are being bullied to leave their jobs without any clarity or certainty from the Administration. They care for our veterans, ensure seniors get their Social Security checks, and save lives on the frontlines of a disaster. They deserve better and Congress must stand against their attempts to gut and dismantle our federal workforce.”
“President Trump, Mr. Vought, and Mr. Musk have offered federal employees an illegal and demoralizing offer to take a ‘buyout’. Over the past three weeks, they have sought to vilify and villainize federal employees working on behalf of the American people. Later today, a court will hear arguments regarding the legality of the ‘Fork in the Road’ offer,” said Rep. Hoyer. “As we fight this illegal maneuver through the courts, we must also determine which Departments, services, and individuals are under attack. Such an offer undermines our nation’s ability to deliver the commitments and services that the American people count on every day. House Democrats will continue to stand up for the American people and the Constitution.”
